Mazara del Vallo – Schools and associations sign the Brussels Declaration “Pledge to Peace”

At an event held in Mazara del Vallo on November 27th, 2013 the most significant educational agency, that is, local schools and associations have signed the Brussels Declaration “Pledge to Peace “, a declaration of intent committing signatories to promote, through project proposals, processes and initiatives for peace education aimed at promoting the well-being of peoples.

The Declaration was signed for the first time on November 28th, 2011 in Brussels at the European Parliament, in the presence of Prem Rawat, the first vice-president of the European Parliament hon. Gianni Pittella and prominent Italian and European organizations and institutions, including the municipality of Mazara del Vallo, represented by Mayor Nicola Cristaldi.

Two years later, and coinciding with the second anniversary of the Brussels Declaration, 27 new signatories which included educational institutes and associations have joined the “Pledge to Peace” in Mazara del Vallo.

The event, which took place in the La Bruna hall in characteristic Jesuit College, featured a video of the ceremony in Brussels during which Prem Rawat, an honorary citizen of Mazara del Vallo, highlighted the importance of peace in people’s lives, and a short video message to the City of Mazara del Vallo by Mr. Pittella.

Percorsi Association was part of the event in its capacity of Secretariat of the “Pledge to Peace”, represented by its President, Piero Scutari. Also attending was the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Social Policies Danilo Di Maria, who, at the end of the signing ceremony, praised the commitment to peace shown by a number of school officials and associations.

Angelo Ditta, human rights consultant to the Mayor, has announced that Mazara’s administration, together with the city’s educational institutions and other cultural associations will be organizing a Day of Peace to be held next spring in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pledge to Peace, Percorsi Association, and the Prem Rawat Foundation.

All the schools in Mazara del Vallo who signed the Pledge to Peace will also take part in a nationwide initiative sponsored by the Ministry of Education and organized by Percorsi in collaboration with The Prem Rawat Foundation and other educational institutions, designed to make peace awareness and peace education primary topics for educational institutions throughout Italy.
