Parish Council makes Pledge to Peace

Lib Dem Councillor Sam Al-Hamdani welcomed the decision of Saddleworth Parish Council to back the international Pledge for Peace, making Oldham the only place in the UK where the Borough and Parish Councils have signed up to the pledge.

The Pledge to Peace is an international commitment for any individuals or organisations “to encourage projects and actions promoting peace in its most universal meaning”. Developed by the Percosi Institute, an independent charity in Italy, it has been signed by individuals and groups all over the world.

Councillor Al-Hamdani, who brought the motion, said: “Most of what the Parish Council delivers are practical services for the community, whether that’s allotments, the graveyard, and community facilities.

“But it is also important that we reflect the wider values of people in Saddleworth. We have a thriving peace movement in our villages, and there are regular events to mark international peace, such as on International Holocaust Day.

Councillor Al-Hamdani was also the first councillor in the UK to sign the ICAN parliamentary pledge, alongside Derek Heffernan, who was Oldham’s first Peace Mayor.

He continued: “Derek was an ardent supporter of the peace movement, and had hoped to see Saddleworth sign the pledge. I’m glad to have been able to realise one of his ambitions; just sad that he isn’t still here to see it.”

Councillor Richard Darlington, who supported the motion, added: “Taking the time to recognise that these values are important to people is a valuable thing for the Parish Council to do. It recognises that we are a part of the community, and we support their work to make this an even better place to live.”
